Tips for Controlling Shopping Expenses within Planned Spending Budgets

The economic and financial situation is quite tough in nearly all the countries on earth. People need to monitor their spending, increase their income sources and enhance savings and investments for a peaceful and better future. Talking about these things is quite easy but implementing them is a very tough proposition.

Lure of Shopping

One of the major drains of our hard-earned money occurs when we do shopping. Shopping is considered a necessary evil, since we cannot avoid buying groceries, medicines and other household items. However, when we go shopping for these essential items, we are invariably distracted by other glittering goods and commodities displayed attractively and enticingly in the shopping centers or on the way. The temptation to buy them is quite strong and very difficult to resist. Even if we control ourselves and limit the purchase of such non-really-needed items to one or two, we find ourselves saddled with a sizeable number of products over a period of time, which we could have easily evaded in the first place. As such, we require a powerful guide to help us organise ourselves during our shopping spree. The following tips should prove useful to all shoppers, particularly to those who are more indulgent during shopping.

1) Always Shop with Cash

The first step in controlled shopping is to leave your credit cards and debit cards at home without even the slightest hesitation. Many people have been ruined financially by carrying plastic cards while shopping and ending up with totally unnecessary items accumulated in their houses that had put a big hole in their monthly budgets, month after month. This is mainly because the upper limits on credit cards are significantly higher than our average monthly income and when you have 3 or 4 credit cards, the total amount adds up to a lakh of rupees or more. On the other hand, when you purchase with cash, you can never spend more than the spare cash that you have been left with for the month. This puts an automatic control on your shopping habits, forcing you to purchase only what you need most.

2) List out All Essential Shopping Items

Many products and materials look great in ads appearing in newspapers and magazines but cost a bundle. For example, a dress or a saree that appears out of the world in the ad does not automatically suit your individual personality. If you buy that out of vanity or indulgent behaviour, you are only wasting your money. This principle applies to all types of goods, materials and products. You should weigh each item whether it will suit you and whether you really need it. Honesty with oneself is most important when it comes to shopping, since it saves time and money. When you prepare the shopping items list, mark the maximum amount that you can spend against each item, with the total amount matching your spending limit. This will give you lot of control over what you can buy and what you should ignore.

3) Evaluate Where You Should Buy What Items

When it comes to buying, you have more options now compared to a decade ago. Shopping malls and exclusive retail outlets had become a common sight in all major metros, cities and towns. Many of them offer competitive prices and discounted products due to their wholesale procurement policies. Online merchants and websites also present attractive door-delivery programmes at economical and comparative prices to improve their sales. At times, exhibitions and special displays are also best place to make bargain purchases. Most manufacturers and large retailers have their own websites. If you register with them, you can avail their various special offers like discount coupons, new product launch incentives, special offers, etc. All these avenues are ideal to save money considerably on your purchases.

4) Exploit Exchange Offers

After a few years of indiscriminate purchase habits, we find that we do not really many items lying unused or sparingly used in your homes. You can make a list of all such items and keep them in a separate place in your house. You should keep a watch for exchange offers for such items in the market and you can get at least some amount for these items when you need to purchase a new and essential product. This not only helps you dispose of unused items but also earns you something in that process.

5) Balance between Utility Products and Trendy Products

When we advise you to keep moderation and strict control over what you buy, our intention is not to stop you from buying trendy items completely. However, purchase of trendy items should be limited to their actual basic needs and utility effects. Further, most trendy products have shorter lifespan compared to regular products. As such, purchase of trendy items should remain in the range of 20% – 30% of the total products, items, goods and materials in your house at any point of time but never more than this.

6) Evaluate Cost vs. Utility

It is a very good practice to evaluate the cost of each product and item against its full utility value. When you make such a calculation, you will clearly understand which ones can be purchased without hesitation and which ones require caution and further analysis before buying. Moreover, the price of any items does not truly reflect its real value. On many occasions, you will find that the actual price of an item does not justify its actual utility value. You can search carefully on such occasions for similar products that have the same utility value but are priced lower. This factor is very important, since we estimate the value of a product only on its price, without analysing its intrinsic value on most occasions. As such, price vs. utility is critical in shopping.
